Türkiye Celebrates Centennial Anniversary
30 OCTOBER 2023

Celebrating its centennial, Türkiye proudly reflects on 100 years of success that it has forged following the downfall of the Ottoman monarchy in 1923. Establishing a system that defied the invasive powers within the region since then has not been easy. Fighting the backlashes of a nulled dictatorship was more about battling the same forces that had brought about the empire's demise. Educating the public and establishing the political terrain for the people to practice their democratic rights was a top priority, but shielding them from fascist outbreaks has been a tough call. On the international front, the country prides itself on its many alliances and relies on its exceptional diplomatic relations in averting the many risks and conflicts in the region.

Israel-Palestine War
23 OCTOBER 2023

A brutal new phase of the Israel-Palestine war began on October 7 when Hamas launched a heavy incursion into southern Israel, killing 1,300 people and taking nearly 200 hostages. Israel's retaliatory bombardment of Gaza since then, from air, sea, and land resulted in a death toll that has already surpassed the 6000 mark, with over 10,000 injured and a million displaced. While the health facilities in Gaza are on the brink of collapse, an evacuation order by Israel creates further chaos since Gazans are already deprived of food, water, and electricity. World leaders call on Egypt and Israel to allow in much-needed humanitarian aid, but Egypt blames Israel for air strikes that left the Rafah crossing inoperable. Meanwhile, tensions on Israel's northern border raise fears of a second front, this time against Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group that operates out of southern Lebanon.

Türkiye-Romania Relations
9 OCTOBER 2023

Following Türkiye's gas deals with Bulgaria and Hungary earlier this year, Romania also signed a natural gas deal with NATO ally Turkiye, set to deliver up to 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to the former Soviet nation. After many Western countries sanctioned Russian oil and gas companies, prices soared and left future supplies volatile. Once heavily reliant on Russian energy, Romania nowadays moves away from that dependency and cements its ties with the West by cooperating in the transmission and storage of natural gas, along with green energy technologies. As for Türkiye, the deal expands on the recent gas discoveries in the Black Sea and contributes to Ankara's push to become an energy hub to help transport Eurasian reserves to European markets.

Türkiye-Netherlands Relations
2 OCTOBER 2023

In the latest incident that sparked outrage across the Muslim world, the leader of an anti-Muslim hate group desecrated a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in the Netherlands. The group's leader, under police protection, also ripped the Quran outside other embassies, including Pakistan and Indonesia. Under Dutch law, desecrating the Quran is protected by freedom of speech. During his speech to the UN General Assembly last week in New York, Turkish President Erdogan condemned the rise of Islamophobia and the Quran burning across Europe, calling them a new form of racism that incites hate speech against Muslims.
