Türkiye-Syria Normalization
25 JUNE 2023

Kazakhstan ends its role as the host to Syrian peace talks between Türkiye, Russia, and Iran, conducted under the Astana Peace Talks banner for 20 rounds since December 2019. Kazakhstan views the Astana dialogue as having achieved its goal of helping Syria emerge from isolation in the region. Although progress in Turkey-Syria normalization is debated, Syria's Bashar al Assad's meetings with several Arab leaders in recent months and joining the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia last month signal a new era, necessitating a different method of diplomatic conduct to tackle the Turkiye-Syria normalization problem at hand.

Turkic Ally Relations
19 JUNE 2023

Fresh off his inauguration, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continued his postelection tradition of visiting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Azerbaijan. The visit demonstrates the importance and value Turkiye attaches to the TRNC cause in the face of global embargos, isolation, and obstacles posed since 1983 upon the declaration of independence. Challenged with international recognition, TRNC prides itself on having been recently granted observer status in the Organization of Turkic States, comprised of Turkiye, Azerbaijan, and several Central Asian countries.

Turkish Troops in Kosovo
12 JUNE 2023

The uneasy peace in North Kosovo is violated with Serbs fighting NATO troops and Kosovo police to block democratically-elected ethnic Albanian mayors from taking office. As violence spreads to NATO peacekeepers, the clashes wound members of 25 Kosovo Force (KFOR) troops, a NATO-led peacekeeping mission that Turkiye has been a part of since the late 1990s. NATO, in response, deploys a Turkish commando battalion to quell simmering tensions in Prizren, while NATO states forces to remain in Kosovo as long as is necessary.

Türkiye-Egypt Relations
5 JUNE 2023

After nearly a decade, Turkiye and Egypt decide to reappoint ambassadors, following a series of Egypt's diplomatic gestures that started with a fast quake-relief effort in February and led to Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi's congratulatory phone call last week to President Erdoğan on his election win. Relations between Ankara and Cairo had soured in 2013 following the overthrow of Egypt's first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi. Egypt's support for the blockade of Qatar a few years later, and its backing of warlord Khalifia Haftar in Libya, had further strained ties that are now healed through a series of high-level talks.
