EU Donors' Conference

European Commission pledged 7.5 billion dollars for Turkiye and Syria at the donor conference in the aftermath of the February 6 earthquakes that claimed the lives of 50,000 people in Turkiye, destroyed over 300,000 buildings, displaced 3 million people and left around 1.5 million people homeless. The funds consist of grants and loans and will go towards rebuilding the devastated areas. The Brussels conference brought together hundreds of countries, international organizations, and financial institutions that pledged to help rebuild homes, hospitals, and schools. The UN Development Programme estimates the total financial burden for Turkiye as $103 billion.

In a beneficial show of solidarity, the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) convened in Ankara on March 16th for leaders of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Hungary, and Turkmenistan to discuss ways to carry out emergency responses to future disasters by way of establishing a coordination and cooperation system within the OTS. President Erdogan praised the exceptional help and support of the Turkic states across Central Asia and the Caucasus following last month's twin earthquakes as they were the first to deploy heroic rescue and generous aid to Türkiye. OTS boasts Turkiye, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan as members, with Hungary, Turkmenistan, and the TRNC attending as observer states.

Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry visits Türkiye's port city of Mersin to oversee the arrival of an Egyptian ship loaded with aid and relief supplies from Egypt to support Türkiye's recovery in the aftermath of the February 6 earthquakes. Shoukry met with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, as a sign of solidarity between the two brotherly peoples. The two countries have suffered strained relations following the 2013 coup that brought Egypt's current president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to power. For the past year, Ankara and Cairo have traded diplomatic gestures, including the possibility of high-level visits.
