Turkiye's Defense Technology
30 JANUARY 2023

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the republic, Türkiye is set to see important milestones in defense production in 2023. Leaving behind a pivotal bumper year in 2022, the country's defense industry boasts having exceeded all export targets and opening new markets. With heightened expectations, the industry now targets $6 billion in exports in 2023. The country's latest homegrown defense technology, from unmanned aircraft to amphibious assault ships and satellites will be tested this year. A series of combat aircraft and UAVs, including the latest Bayraktar TB3 drones are also scheduled to make their maiden flights. All UAVs will be deployed on Turkiye's future flagship, the TCG Anadolu. With nearly 2,000 companies operating in the sector, Turkiye's defense industry is the key driving force that creates indigenous technology in the country.

Turkiye-Sweden Relations

As Sweden and Finland report diligent work to fulfill Turkiye's expectations on the extradition of 130 terrorists before joining NATO, the racist leader of the Danish far-right party Stram Kurs (Hard Line), Rasmus Paludan takes the initiative to protest Turkiye's demands, seemingly in protection of these terrorists who are mostly Muslim and of Kurdish origin, by burning a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, all under the official permit and protection by the Swedish officials. Turkiye cancels a planned visit by Sweden’s defense minister in response to the anti-Turkish protests in the Nordic country and strongly condemns the vile attack on Islam’s holy book in the Swedish capital, refuting the Swedish expectation to tolerate it as a form of 'freedom of speech'.

Türkiye-Greece Relations
16 JANUARY 2023

After a tense year of diplomatic unrest over maritime borders, Turkiye-Greece relations are struggling with Athens' impromptu plan to extend its territorial waters from 6 to 12 nautical miles to the south and west of Crete island. In May 2022, Athens gave the US access to three more Greek military bases and sent armored US vehicles to Lesvos and Samos. Later that month, Greek PM Mitsotakis visited Washington and called on the US to block the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkiye. All of this, coupled with Greece's constant illegal pushbacks in the Aegean, the issue between the two NATO allies becomes a bitter quagmire, especially when Greece feels justified in militarizing demilitarized islands against the Lausanne and Paris treaties.

2022 was a milestone in Türkiye's relations with the USA. From the F-16 fighter jets deal to dialogue on regional issues, Türkiye found common ground to strengthen relations with its NATO ally. Despite raising concerns about Türkiye's stance against Sweden and Finland's NATO bids, while tolerating tensions with Greece and challenging cross-border operations in Syria, the Biden administration showed its willingness to find solutions to address Ankara's security concerns.

Türkiye's Mediator Role
2 JANUARY 2023

Despite the diplomatic crisis and political division the world suffered last year over Russia's attack on Ukraine, Türkiye proved its mediator merit by keeping relations steady with both sides and successfully led all efforts to restore peace. President Erdogan has been in regular contact with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin since the attack began on February 24. Both leaders have held meetings in Tehran, Sochi, Astana, and Samarkand. Erdogan has also met Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Lviv. His efforts proved vital in paving the way for a historic grain deal in July. Türkiye also mediated a prisoner exchange deal which led to the release of 215 Ukrainians and 55 Russians. Putin even suggested that Türkiye should act as an energy hub for Russian gas, which faces EU sanctions. At every step of the conflict, Erdogan has called on both sides to give peace a chance.
