The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, recently visited Beijing to discuss cooperation between Turkey and China. He held talks on renewable energy and rare earth minerals that are essential for modern industries. Two years ago, Ankara had announced the discovery of the world's second-largest rare earth reserves, second only to China and now Bayraktar's visit paved the way for a preliminary deal on what officials are calling the 'energy transition'. Apart from renewable energy, a Chinese company is also in contention to build a nuclear plant in Turkey's Thrace region.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to solve decades-long issues while showing a strong commitment to their renewed friendship. The meeting is their fourth in the last ten months, and the thaw in relations will also benefit the Turkish-Greek minority in Greece, a community that has been struggling with a series of bans on their schools and mosques. The two NATO allies discussed a myriad of issues, ranging from maritime disputes in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas to finding a solution for a divided Cyprus.

Israel's recent military operation in Rafah, despite international calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, has led Turkiye to suspend all trade with Israel and to back a genocide case at the International Court of Justice. These measures will remain in place until the Israeli government puts an end to its attacks in Gaza, and ensures a permanent ceasefire and uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the region. Türkiye's export record with Israel over the past 27 years stands at an annualized rate of 12.5%, from $288M in 1995 to $7B in 2022.

Historic LNG Deal
6 MAY 2024

A new liquified natural gas deal between Turkiye and Exxonmobil is on the horizon as the country looks to diversify its energy imports. The substantial progress in the Ankara-Washington relations signifies a positive reconciliation that extends to energy interests. The most noticeable sign of the rapprochement is a multibillion-dollar LNG Deal with ExxonMobil. While the $1.1B deal promises to fulfill Turkiye's energy ambitions, it is also estimated to influence its relationship with Russia, the country's top energy provider.
