Turkey's energy diplomacy in Africa has resulted in a major agreement with uranium and mineral-rich Niger, following a high-level delegation meeting in Niger's capital, Niamey. During the visit, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar discussed cooperation in the fields of energy and mining. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Defense Minister Yaşar Güler explored opportunities to enhance counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel region. The visit comes after the West African nation severed mining contracts with key Western countries, including France, and called for French and US troops to leave the country.

50th Anniversary of
Cyprus Peace Operation
22 JULY 2024

Turkish Cypriots celebrate the 50th anniversary of Türkiye's Peace Operation in Cyprus which has for half a century been the only means of protection that shields them from the atrocities of the ethnic-cleansing-plotting Greek Cypriots. Backed by the military junta in Greece, the Cypriot National Guard staged a coup on 15 July 1974 and ousted the then-president Archbishop Makarios III to continue the era of violence that had started in 1963. Türkiye's intervention five days later by sea and air granted freedom to the Turkish minority on the island and ended the mindless bloodshed recurring on the island. Türkiye invoked Article IV of the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee that authorized guarantor powers (Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and the UK) to take action to restore the situation in Cyprus to its previous state.

Türkiye-Japan Relations
1 JULY 2024

Türkiye and Japan are marking their 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established after Tokyo had ratified Türkiye's founding agreement, the Lausanne Treaty. Despite being on the opposite ends of Asia, both countries have shared close economic ties. In January, during a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan heralded that this year will see the opening of the Turkish-Japanese Science and Technology University in Istanbul. In 1890, the Ertugrul frigate, an Ottoman naval ship, embarked on a voyage stretching more than 10-thousand kilometers to open official relations with Japan. More than 130 years later, a Turkish corvette, TCG Kinaliada, took the same journey to mark the centennial of diplomatic ties between Ankara and Tokyo.
