President Erdoğan delivered a speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York where he reiterated the need for reform at the world body. He called for justice in Palestine, especially Gaza, which has been under Israeli attacks for nearly a year. He criticized the UN's inaction against Israel and urged the international community to stop Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding a global alliance to take a stance akin to that taken against Hitler 70 years ago. Erdoğan also held sideline meetings in New York, including with UN Chief Guterres and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as the Armenian and Greek prime ministers.

Türkiye to Join BRICS

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated in an interview that had Türkiye has been a full member of the European Union, it would not need to search for alternatives like BRICS - a group of emerging economies. Fidan also noted that had Türkiye been part of the EU, the bloc may have avoided the fragmentation it saw with Brexit. Fidan has been stepping up his engagement with the EU in recent weeks. He attended an informal EU ministers meeting in Brussels, the first participation by Türkiye after a 5-year absence. Despite stalled progress on Türkiye’s EU membership, Fidan said Ankara was still committed to joining the bloc. Accession negotiations began in 2005, but stalled in 2018 over a series of political differences and the lingering issue over the island of Cyprus.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended a meeting of the Arab League's Council of Foreign Ministers in Cairo, marking the first time in 13 years following a period of strained relations that began with the Arab Spring in 2011. While several Arab governments in North Africa and the Gulf, including Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, have restored ties with Türkiye, reconciliation with Syria remains a hot topic. During the recent meeting, the ministers discussed Turkish-Arab relations, regional issues, and the Gaza War. In his address, Fidan emphasized the significance of collaboration in achieving regional stability and security.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi visited President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara, marking the first visit by an Egyptian leader in 12 years. Given the ongoing war in Gaza and significant developments in key parts of Africa, the stakes have become too high for Turkey and Egypt to ignore. Following their one-on-one meeting, the two leaders oversaw the signing of 17 agreements, covering everything from defense cooperation to energy and eyeing a $15B trade goal. Relations have rapidly improved over the past year following Egypt's aid assistance during the Feb 6th earthquakes and President Erdogan's landmark visit to Egypt earlier this year.

Türkiye-Iran Relations

Following the death of Iran's president in a helicopter crash in May, the country scrambled to fill a power vacuum, and lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian was soon appointed president. Following the approval of his full cabinet through parliament last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hopes for stronger ties between the two neighbors. Addressing the fallout from Israel’s war on Gaza remains the most pressing issue for Ankara and Tehran. Both sides have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and are looking to tackle security issues in Iraq and the South Caucasus to secure vital energy and transport links. Turkey and Iran also share an interest and participation in the Chinese- and Russian-led BRICS and SCO blocs, known for countering Western institutions.
