Diplomacy with Israel
30 MAY 2022
After a decade of tensions, Israel and Türkiye start a new chapter in relations with the foreign ministers meeting in West Jerusalem. While both sides agree to reenergise relations, Turkey plans for the meeting to have enough impact to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Strained Turkish-Israeli relations worsened in 2010, after Israeli forces killed ten civilians on a Turkish ship providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. Relations also hit low points due to Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza and the US’ decision to move its embassy to West Jerusalem, which caused Ankara to recall its ambassador in May 2018.
