US Lifts Arms Ban on Greek Cyprus
26 SEPTEMBER 2022

President Erdoğan attends the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York. Among a myriad of topics, he calls for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). During the UNGA Week, however, he is met with the news of the US lifting a decades-long arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot administration, a decision that Türkiye warns as carrying severe consequences for the ethnically divided island of Cyprus. The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar said lifting the 1987 US weapons ban would embolden their rival government in the south. Founded in 1983, the TRNC governs the northern part of the island and has engaged in multiple rounds of peace talks with its neighbor to the south.

Founded in 2001 by China and Russia, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) hosts Turkiye's President Erdogan as a special guest at this year's summit, held in the Uzbek city of Samarkand. Türkiye, as a NATO member, is also a dialogue partner of the SCO, which consists of eight permanent members, namely China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, India, and Pakistan. SCO benefits from having grown into a major political organization, strengthening security and economic cooperation in Asia. President Erdogan's attendance channels high-level discussions on whether Turkiye would take the necessary steps to become a full SCO member.

France's False Allegations
5 SEPTEMBER 2022

During a recent trip to France's former colony Algeria, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed networks originating from Russia, China, and Türkiye as carrying out "anti-French propaganda" in Africa, accusing the three countries of having a neo-colonial and imperialist agenda. In response, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavusoğlu addressed Macron's statement as "unfortunate," stating that Türkiye has partnership bonds with African countries that lead them to view Türkiye as a trustworthy partner.
