US Lifts Arms Ban on Greek Cyprus
26 SEPTEMBER 2022
President Erdoğan attends the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York. Among a myriad of topics, he calls for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). During the UNGA Week, however, he is met with the news of the US lifting a decades-long arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot administration, a decision that Türkiye warns as carrying severe consequences for the ethnically divided island of Cyprus. The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar said lifting the 1987 US weapons ban would embolden their rival government in the south. Founded in 1983, the TRNC governs the northern part of the island and has engaged in multiple rounds of peace talks with its neighbor to the south.
