The UN General Assembly opened under the shadow of wars and growing tensions across the Middle East. President Erdogan met leaders from Qatar, the UK, Bangladesh, and Japan, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Erdoğan put Gaza at the centre of his speech, calling for greater international pressure on Israel and renewed support for an independent Palestinian state. He also called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and warned against further escalation in the Gulf.

Middle East Tensions
21 SEPTEMBER 2026

The Iran war has raised fundamental questions about the future of the Middle East, global energy security, and American leadership. US forces have left their major bases in Syria and are withdrawing from Iraq. Meanwhile, Türkiye-Israel tensions are deepening, as Israel strengthens military ties with Greece through a $3.5 billion deal. Amid that uncertainty, new alliances like the Mecca Defence Alliance between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan pledge to treat an attack on one as an attack on all.

Amid renewed tensions between NATO allies Greece and Türkiye, Greece signed a $3.5 billion deal with Israel, dubbed the Achilles Shield, a military alignment that alters the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean. The agreement is a multi-layered air defence network designed to counter missiles, aircraft and drones. Ankara argues that Athens is violating longstanding agreements by expanding its military presence on Aegean islands, and has warned Greece against further provocations.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Kyrgyzstan, President Erdogan said Türkiye would seek to advance cooperation in every field. Led by China, Russia, Iran, and other Eurasian powers, the SCO represents nearly half the world's population in the East. As conflicts from Ukraine to the Middle East reshape the global order, many critics see the SCO as a growing challenge to the West, but for Türkiye it is a matter of balancing its NATO commitments while deepening ties with Eurasia.
