A joint press conference between the foreign ministers of Turkey and Greece heated up after accusations are exchanged in Ankara. As Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias accused Turkey of violating international law, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu argued that the accusations are baseless.

Ever since Greece declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830, Turks and Greeks suffered the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Balkan War (1911-1913), World War I (1914-1918), Turkish Independence War (1919–1922), 1922 Greco-Turkish population exchange, 1955 Istanbul pogrom, 1963 Turkish-Cypriot massacre, 1974 Cypriot coup d'etat which then prompted Turkey to partition the island to establish Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Issue 1: Territorial Waters

In August 2020, Turkey conducted seismic research activities in the Eastern Mediterranean per UN-backed agreements and announcements. Basing exclusive economic zone (EEZ) calculations on tiny islands in the Aegean Sea, Greece decried Turkey's NAVTEX (navigational telex), arguing that the surveys were within the Greek continental shelf, accusing Turkey of planning an invasion.

Issue 2: Militarized Greek Islands

In September 2020, Athens openly stationed troops on the island of Meis, a demilitarized zone two kilometers off Turkish shores. Turkey has called the move unacceptable and a violation of international law.

Issue 3: Pushback of Refugees

In March 2020, hundreds of refugees and migrants piled up at Turkey's Greek border after Ankara opened the gates to Europe. Greece detested the move and fired tear gas and stun grenades at the migrants. Since then the Greek authorities are reportedly pushing back refugees on boats into the Turkish territorial waters and abandoning them for Turkey to resolve the issue.
